Key steps to take before getting divorced

On Behalf of Meadows Law Firm | Jun 21, 2021 | Divorce

A divorce can have a significant impact on your mental, physical and emotional health. However, planning for a divorce before filing paperwork with an Ohio court may make it easier to minimize that impact. As a general rule, you’ll want to consider issues such as where you’ll live after your marriage ends or what your financial needs will be as a single person.

An uncontested divorce may be your best option

Filing for an uncontested divorce allows you and your spouse to work together to come to terms on a divorce settlement before going to court. In most cases, couples who negotiate a divorce agreement outside of court are able to negotiate better deals for themselves in less time. Furthermore, since it may be possible to complete some of the marriage dissolution process without a family law attorney, an uncontested divorce will likely be less expensive than a contested one.

Gather documents before beginning the divorce process

Gathering bank statements, tax returns and other documents may make it easier to determine what your future needs might be. For instance, a look at your tax return may reveal that you could be entitled to a larger refund if you filed a single return as opposed to doing so jointly with your spouse. That might help you make up a portion of the money that you’ll lose by divorcing your current partner.

It’s important to start taking action now if you think that your relationship status is going to change in the near future. An attorney may be able to help you gather the evidence needed to obtain a favorable outcome in your case. Your attorney may also use the discovery process to help you gain access to information that might strengthen your bargaining position.
